Austin Extends Stay at Home Order and Requires Face Masks if Leaving Residence

On April 13, Mayor Steve Adler extended Austin’s stay at home order until at least May 8. In the order, Mayor Adler also required anyone leaving the house to wear a face covering. Specifically, anyone leaving his or her residence must wear a face covering unless he or she is:

  • Alone in a separate single space, whether indoor or outdoor;

  • In the presence only of members of that person’s residence;

  • When doing so poses a greater mental or physical health, safety, or security risk;

  • When engaged in outdoor activity (i.e., exercise); or

  • For consumption purposes.

The face covering rules apply to essential businesses. So while essential businesses are encouraged to remain open, their employees must wear face coverings when in public around other people.

In addition, the Mayor had some specific rules for people working in construction. In addition to face coverings, construction site managers shall:

  • Institute staggered shifts for sites with more than 10 active workers;

  • Pre-screen the general health of each worker every day before the start of work;

  • Ensure that each site has at least one handwashing station with soap or hand sanitizer;

  • Mandate periodic handwashing by workers;

  • Prohibit the use of community water coolers and provide individual water bottles;

  • Disinfect shared tools between uses;

  • Post signs in both English and Spanish explaining social distancing and face coverings;

  • Provide single use disposable paper towels;

  • Keep clean restrooms; and

  • Designate a COVID-19 safety monitor at the site.

We encourage you to read Mayor Adler’s full order. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call. Thank you.
